NEW YORK
A hot new play about the trials and tribulations facing black women
was selected on Friday by PSNBC, NBC's theater designed to showcase
the next wave of emerging artists, as best of New York International
Fringe Festival for a special performance on Wednesday, October 16.
'Da Kink In My Hair (voices of black womyn) is being highlighted in "The Best of New York Fringe," NBC's showcase of the cream of the crop festival, which was held this summer and was dedicated to smaller, cutting edge theater productions. Of the 195 productions performed during the festival, 'Da Kink is one of the five that NBC selected for the good reviews and "buzz" they garnered. 'Da Kink led festival ticket sales.
Hailed as the black woman's Vagina Monologues and presented by Trey Anthony of Plaitform Entertainment, 'Da Kink In My Hair revolves around Novelette, a West Indian hairdresser, and the parade of women that pass through her salon. Through a series of monologues, comedian and playwright Trey Anthony uses humour, spoken word, raw emotion and honesty to explore taboo subjects, such as incest, sexuality, interracial dating, suicide, and more. Weyni Mengesha skillfully directs a dynamic, all female cast, including Debbie Young, Ordena Stephens, Miranda Edwards, Racheal-Lee Rickards, Ngozi Paul, and Trey Anthony.
Loosely based on Anthony's own life experiences and the "secrets" that numerous that women have shared with her, 'Da Kink In My Hair first debuted during Black History Month 2001 at The Now Lounge in Toronto
"I didn't think people would be so interested in what goes on in my life and the lives of my friends and family," Anthony said.
She was wrong! The response was overwhelming and the interest has continued. Sold out shows, audience raves and critical acclaim have followed each performance.
Gregg Bellon from NY theater.com, who saw 'Da Kink at the Fringe Festival called it "extremely engaging, entertaining, and emotionally charged! Pure organic magic!"
Anthony's future plans include an upcoming run at Canada's most renowned theater, Theatre Passe Muraille. She is also planning a U.S. tour for the show.
In January 2000, NBC became the first broadcast network to open and operate an artistic showcase designed to develop and nurture writers, actors, and comedic performers. Known as PSNBC (www.nbc.com/psnbc), and located within the H.E.R.E. Arts Center at 145 Sixth Avenue (between Spring and Dominick Streets), it offers new artists, with or without representation, a direct path to network casting and development executives.
'Da Kink In My Hair, takes you on a journey of emotions that promises to leave you laughing, crying, thinking, and exhaling.
